Among a myriad of emerging technologies, artificial intelligence is a prominent one that promises advancements in a number of industries. Artificial Intelligence (AI), also known as machine intelligence, is the intelligence demonstrated by machines. The devices understand the environment and take actions which maximize the chances of achieving goals successfully. Although AI has automated a number of jobs in recent years, it is also playing a major role in making the workplaces better. Implementation of AI in many processes is still in a nascent stage but if developed in the right ways it could help companies identify the issues that hamper employee productivity and efficiency.

How AI could impact workers?

Combining AI with other technologies like 3D printing and robotics could help in making the production of goods and services more efficient. While advanced robotics can perform manual tasks, AI machines can also be trained to perform a number of cognitive and non-routine tasks. However, although increased productivity would benefit the society, it would also affect the individual workers. Research suggests that in the near future, a number of workers will be replaced by machines in certain industries. Also, there are many cognitive jobs which are challenging and well paying. AI also threatens the disruption of such jobs as the machines are increasingly taking up cognitive tasks.

How AI could increase work efficiency?

In some fields like medicine and education AI could transform the work culture where machines will be performing in close coordination with skilled humans resulting in increased efficiency. One of the prominent examples is medical diagnosis for which machines can be trained to analyze digital information of patients to produce diagnoses for sick patients along with recommendations for further tests and treatment. With machines, a larger amount of data can be analyzed, combining it with latest research. This increases the accuracy of diagnosis and lowers the burden of doctors. Same is also applicable to educational sector where teachers and machines can work together.

How AI could help in employee management?

Till date many managers rely on their “gut feeling” to make important decisions. AI can be applied to employee data to draw inferences on a number of aspects like how to motivate employees or identifying the things that make employees unhappy. AI can provide an organization details about the employee behavior and why the employees are leaving. This, in turn, could help in identifying the hidden problems of an organization and resolving them.In fact, artificial intelligence could be so precise that it could detect signals even from specific employees. Such information could help companies in formulating better policies. Additionally, machine learning techniques could also help in predicting problems even before they materialize.

How AI could help in recruitment?

In this era where companies often struggle to find the right candidates, AI could also help in identifying candidates. Statistics suggests that a number of jobs that are in-demand today didn’t even exist few years ago. This has led to a shortage of talent for positions such as programmatic advertising manager, social media director and data scientist. AI and advanced analytics could help in closing this skill gap by pinpointing specific skills and work experience which could be transferred to create a significantly different role. AI can also help in determining if an organization should automate certain jobs or should get them done manually. Thus a company can understand whether human labor would be more productive and cost-effective or technology could perform it better.

Although artificial intelligence experiences much resistance due to fact that it replaces human workers leading to disappearance of traditional jobs, its benefits and future prospects cannot be entirely overlooked. Adopting any new technology requires careful thinking and analysis which could lead to better options, and artificial intelligence also needs the same.
